Dry skin on the hands and face

Dry skin on the hands and face

Dry skin on the hands and on the face: what do these problems have in common?

Dry skin problems are definitely not just on the hands. Dry skin is also common elsewhere on the body, for example on the face and around the eyes. Why does the skin tend to dry out in these areas and how can we protect it from the unpleasant sensation of dryness?

Dry skin on the hands and face 2

Dry skin means discomfort and can't be treated without care
Typical descriptions of dry skin include terms such as rough, flaky and itchy. All these manifestations are very unpleasant and can be a source of daily discomfort. Dry skin on the hands and face can have many causes, but with proper and regular care, you can "beat" dry skin and get soft and supple skin. Many people only complain of dry skin at certain times of the year, for example if it is freezing outside. For some, however, it is a long-term issue that cannot be managed without quality skin care products.

Look for the causes in the weather, the way you wash and your age
Dry skin on the face can have similar causes to dry skin on the hands. The most common causes are external influences such as inclement weather, excessively warm and dry indoor air or improper hygiene habits. Hot water washing, the use of irritating or perfumed cosmetic products and too frequent exfoliation are not good for the skin. Dry skin can also be related to certain diseases (e.g. atopic eczema, psoriasis, low thyroid function) or medications. Another factor is age - as you get older, dry skin on the hands and dry skin on the face is a natural occurrence, as ageing skin loses elasticity. Dry skin around the eyes may also be related to the fact that the skin in this area is thinner and more delicate than on other parts of the body.

When to be alert and consult a doctor?
In most cases, dry skin responds well to adjustments in daily habits and the problem can be alleviated or completely resolved on its own. However, if the skin condition does not improve, it is necessary to see a doctor. This is especially true if the dry and tight skin develops cracks, is painful and shows signs of infection. Dry skin around the eyes accompanied by eye pain or sensitivity to light is a clear signal to visit the doctor's office.

A practical ten commandments against dry skin

  • Wash your face and the area around your eyes with lukewarm, not hot, water.
  • Use mild, unscented cosmetics free of allergens, alcohol and artificial colours.
  • Be gentle when wiping the skin on your hands and face and do not rub your skin too hard with a towel.
  • Use moisturisers immediately after washing or bathing.
  • Remember to drink plenty of water.
  • Limit caffeinated drinks, which contribute to dehydration.
  • After swimming in a pool with chlorinated water, shower thoroughly and treat your skin with your own proven cosmetics.
  • Watch the ingredients in your cosmetics - the American Academy of Dermatology recommends ingredients such as jojoba oil, dimethicone, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, petroleum jelly or shea butter.
  • Professions in which the skin on the hands is burdened by frequent washing or disinfection (e.g., doctors, nurses, caregivers or hairdressers) should be doubly mindful of all guidelines.
  • In indoor areas where the air conditioning is on for long periods, the use of humidifiers is recommended. Outdoors, on the other hand, it is advisable to protect hands and face from the cold with gloves and non-irritating cosmetic products.

With sunscreen, the skin will be both hydrated and more resistant

The DermaGuard protective barrier cream is a good choice for the spring months, when cold and warm days alternate, which together with windy weather puts a strain on the skin. The product, which is designed for dry and sensitive skin, creates a protective microfilm to shield the skin from a range of external influences. The cream works for 4 to 6 hours without leaving a greasy film on the skin. Just rub it gently into the skin, where it is quickly absorbed and forms a protective barrier within two minutes. Using DermaGuard can become a daily routine, but it is also excellent for protecting the skin from expected stresses, for example in dusty environments or when using irritants.
